The Marcus Evans Summit was very productive

“I had some very fruitful discussions during the networking sessions at the Marcus Evans Summit. One of our conversations led to a co-shared project for a client of a private wealth manager we met at the Summit,” said Jean-Noel Coster, Head of Investment Services, Camelot Trust Pte Ltd, a delegate at the Marcus Evans Private Wealth Management APAC Summit.

What possibilities and opportunities did the Summit lead to?

We started a business relationship with a private wealth manager we met casually during one of the break-out sessions. We had an interesting discussion and discovered we shared some common interests. We did not know them before, and it is unlikely that we would have met. We did not select to have a one-on-one meeting with them, as the way they had described themselves in the event material had not appealed to us.

A few weeks after the Summit, they called us back. They remembered our chat and wanted to check if we could help one of their clients. It turns out that we could! They introduced us to their client who was looking for an exit from one of their businesses, and we helped them to identify potential targets. The Transaction value was around USD 20 million.

Would you have ended up working with these individuals if they had called or emailed you directly?

No. We are submerged in email! Cold calls, emails and LinkedIn messages do not work well. We receive too many of them and I ignore most of them unless I already know the person or the person has been referred to me by my network. Most of the time, I talk to individuals I have met in person, and they refer me to their contacts.

What did you think of the one-to-one meeting format?

It is an interesting format, because you dedicate 30-minutes of your time to that person, and vice versa. It is a good way to understand their approach and what they do. Much more efficient than other formats. At the end of the day, you get a clear idea of whether you want to proceed further.

How would you compare the Marcus Evans Summit with other industry events?

I prefer to meet people face-to-face, so the Summit was very productive. I wanted to connect with new people, create new business opportunities, and the Summit was rich in that way. A few of the presentations were also valuable. Overall, it was an interesting and fruitful event for me.
