Marcus Evans does a very good job of matching GPs and LPs
“Our family office has invested around USD 30-40 million into four funds we met through Marcus
Evans,” said Alex Felman, General Partner, Felman Family Office, a speaker and delegate at the
Marcus Evans Elite Summit.
What new opportunities has Marcus Evans brought your way?
Over the years, we have been introduced to many interesting funds we were not aware of, that we
probably would not have discovered on our own. Our one-to-one meetings with managers have led
to interesting discussions and allocations of around USD 30-40 million in total. Those funds were
not on our radar and would not have otherwise reached that far along our process.
At the most recent Elite Summit, we ended up spending lots of time with one of the venture funds.
We are now helping them with European markets, and might invest into one of their subsequent
funds when the timing is better.
As a family group, we try to find good partners and then figure out how best to work together. It
was the face-to-face meetings and the time we spent together at the Summit that allowed us to
build a relationship.
Would you have been able to build that relationship if they had approached you directly?
It would have been difficult to do this in a different setting. They might have made it through an
initial filtering, perhaps we would have agreed to have a short meeting, but it would have ended
there. Some of the communication around what they do was unclear. We had to get to know them
at a much deeper level for this to develop. The in-person relationship building made a big
difference.
Is it usually difficult to get your attention, to get through your door?
I get tons of outreach every week, and I ignore most of it. The way many funds reach out to us is
ineffective, while others are simply irrelevant.
How would you compare the Elite Summit to other industry events?
Marcus Evans does a very good job of matchmaking. The people we actually meet are prequalified,
therefore generally relevant to what we’re looking for. That is the biggest thing that makes the difference. The Elite Summit is particularly good at this component. Compared to all the other events, the curation Marcus Evans does to make sure our meetings are appropriate makes it the most effective and productive event I go to.
I consider the Elite Summit a top tier event. It consistently outperforms other events I attend. It is
the one that I trust the most. The quality of deal flows is much higher. The proportion of GPs to
LPs is much better. Most other events have too many GPs in the room. The marcus evans format
allows us to build relationships and understand if there’s potentially a good fit. That is very
important to us.
